This side-filling, chambered-type sampler is ideal for the paleoecological analysis of bog and salt marsh sediments; collecting uncompressed cores in poorly decomposed woody peat; and shallow water sampling applications. The discrete point sampler can be driven to any point in the sediment profile in the closed (empty) position. When the target depth is reached, simply turn the T-handle clockwise to begin sampling. The sharpened edge of the core tube longitudinally cuts through sediments to produce a semi-cylindrical shaped sample which can be recovered without risk of contamination from overlying sediments. A counterclockwise rotation extrudes the sample onto the cutting plate. The borer measures 50 cm x 6 cm O.D. with a 0.476 cm wall thickness and features a nominal volume of 31.023 cubic inches or 503.38 cubic centimeters (can vary depending on soil conditions). The cutting plate and borer tube are made of stainless steel, and the borer tip and cap are made of aluminum. The kit includes a borer sampler head, a T-handle, two 1.2 meter aluminum extensions, and a carrying case. Use the optional slide hammer (sold separately) to drive and retrieve the borer in compact deposits. Additional extension rods are also available.
